It doesn’t matter if you have black hair or not as going from black to blonde is certainly going to be a very challenging process. You can transform even the darkest colour of your hair to blonde if it is in a good state and has not been damaged by any chemical treatments. In this article, you will learn how to do it safely and effectively. Once you learn the process, you can achieve great results from the comfort of your home without heading to hair salons.
Can you colour black hair blonde?
It is a very difficult process to change from dark hair to blonde. Before you try to lighten your hair, it is important to assess whether your hair is in a good condition. It doesn’t matter if you have coloured your hair with black dye, but it may certainly slow down the process and add an extra step. The condition of your hair is more important than any other aspect.
Hair condition
It is not recommended to bleach black hair if your hair has suffered from damage in the past or if you have thin, fine hair. People with naturally strong and healthy hair can colour their black hair to blonde. The following are not recommended for those who want to colour their hair black to blonde:
- Anybody who has had a relaxing or perm treatment
- Anybody who has coloured their hair a lot in the past
- Anybody with thin, fine hair texture
You can colour your hair blonde if you aren’t related to any of the above contraindications. You will need to visit a salon first to get your hair checked. It is possible to still colour your hair with a gentle and slow process. However, this must be examined in person to ensure that your hair stays healthy.
Virgin Hair vs. Coloured Hair
If you have coloured your hair before, and the colour hasn’t fully grown out, it is a good idea to do the extra step of colour removal before bleaching your hair. Virgin hair is hair that has not been coloured or has grown out fully. This is called virgin hair. It will respond well to lightening.
The entire process will be much easier if you have virgin hair. If you have been colouring your hair with black dyes multiple times, it will be much more difficult to get rid of the artificial colour.
It usually takes 2-3 steps to achieve blonde hair after bleaching dark hair. To remove as much colour as possible, you should first use hair colour remover. This will decrease the amount of bleach that you have to use.
What is Hair Colour Remover?
Permanent hair colour is created by oxidation. The majority of colour pigment is found in the form of colourless molecules, called intermediates, when you first poke the tube containing the colour preparation. These molecules are so tiny that they can penetrate the hair shaft but do not contain any colour pigment.
The peroxide inside the hair colour oxidized and permits these molecules can be combined with other compounds to create highly pigmented molecules. This makes your hair colour look permanent and gives it the desired colour.
This product can reverse the reaction and is extremely useful. The hair colour remover disintegrates artificial colour molecules to their original form. This allows the colour to be removed from the hair. The colour disappears like magic in just a few minutes.
Hair Colour Remover
If your hair is darkened by hair dyes or you have used another colour, hair colour remover should also be used. This allows you to get rid of as much colour as possible. It also improves the lightening power of bleach.
The less you have to bleach your black hair, the more you will save time and minimize the damage.
Mixing
You will see that the hair colour removal product is packaged in two separate containers when you open it. Because one product causes the reaction, this is important. The product would not work if the two solutions were combined at the time you bought.
Ordinary citric acid is one of these solutions. It is also the acid found in lemons. Another one is an acid that can reduce the amount of hair colour molecules in hair when mixed with another product. These two products are not toxic or hazardous and won’t cause skin irritation like bleach.
Hair colour remover can cause severe allergic reactions. You should not apply it to hair already experiencing extreme dryness.
Application
Before you start mixing the products, some preparation is needed for it to be applied. Mix the products together and the reaction will start. If it is left to sit too long, it will eventually exhaust itself and will not be effective. Mix the two products together and quickly apply them to your hair, massaging it well.
In just a few minutes, you will notice a change in your hair’s colour. You may be able to return to a lighter colour if you have previously coloured your hair black. You might not notice a significant change in your hair colour if you have coloured it black several times. However, this product will still remove significant amount of the black hair colour buildup and make bleaching much easier later.
Rinsing
Allow the product to sit for about 20 minutes before you wash it. It is important to rinse quickly because shampoo needs to be absorbed into the hair. If you don’t shampoo your hair well, the oxygen in the air will slowly oxidize any colours that are still in your hair.
After washing your hair two times, condition it with a moisturizing treatment. The hair colour removal process is complete. This can be repeated up to three more times with some gap in between in the following days only if your hair has been coloured multiple times.
The art of bleaching black hair
Hair colour remover is recommended for those who have coloured their hair black. You can bleach your hair if your hair belongs to virgin hair or have completed the hair colour removal process.
Tips
It is rare that you can bleach black hair either nature or dyed in a single sitting. This is strong related correlated to the quality of the bleach powder. It is usually necessary to bleach your hair at least twice for majority of situation.
To avoid damaging your hair when bleaching twice, it is best to bleach them at least once a week separately. You should never bleach your hair twice in a day. This will cause hair to become more damaged and more sensitive.
It is important to wait for a few days before applying hair colour remover. Also, you should apply bleach to hair that was not shampooed for sometimes. Your hair’s natural oils will protect it from irritation, and help keep it conditioned. However, shampoo can strip these oils. The more oil on the hair, the less you cause irritation to your hair and the less dryness of your hair, the better.
Product Selection
You must use salon-grade bleach powder. It is not possible to use cheap bleach powder from the grocery store or pharmacy and expect the best results. These bleach powders are more damaging and won’t lighten hair as effectively.
Cheap bleach powders will only lift 3 levels of hair with 30 vol peroxide. Salon products on the other hand, can lighten up to 7 levels with 20 vol. To keep your hair healthy while bleaching, the salon bleach powder contains conditioning agents and nourishing components.
It is important to not use too much developer. Use of 40 vol developer is too much and should not be combined with bleach. This peroxide volume is intended for permanent colours or high-lift colours. Depending on the sensitiveness of your scalp, you can use either 20 or 30 Vol developer.
Specialty blonde bleaches will contain lift boosters. For maximum lift, you will only need 20 vol developer. If in doubt, consult your bleach powder’s directions. The best products should not be mixed with a stronger product as it can cause severe scalp irritation.
Application
Divide your hair into sections to bleach it. To bleach your hair, divide your hair from your forehead to your neck and again from ear-to-ear. This will give you four sections.
Apply bleach one section at time. Start by taking thin layers from the hair section you are working with and then covering the entire area with the bleach. Start at the top and work your way to the bottom. Continue this process until you have completely bleached your hair.
Development and Rinsing
The bleach can be left in the container for up to an hour, depending on which brand. However, you must make sure that it is checked every 5-10 minutes during processing. Wash your scalp immediately if the bleach causes irritation.
The first bleach process for bleaching black hair will usually only transform your hair from black to orange depending on whether it’s coloured or virgin hair. This is normal for black hair. Either tone your orange hair with a semi-permanent or temporary colour, or wait for it to go away before bleaching it again.
You will need to wait for your hair to rest completely after the first bleaching process. This is to allow natural oils to build up, and to give your hair time to rest. Your hair will lighten from an orange colour to a yellow-golden or lighter shade depending on what factors you are using during the second bleaching application.
The hair with black dyes will be gradually transited to light orange which is the norm. Natural black hair will turn yellow. You can tone both to blonde if you have sufficiently lightened your hair. If you prefer a blonder look, let your hair reach a lighter shade of yellow. Just rinse earlier if you prefer darker blonde tones.
Toning your hair
Once the bleaching process is completed, your hair will turn a yellow-to-golden colour or a lighter shade of orange. Natural black hair becomes lighter in colour, first from red to orange then to yellow. This is when it can be toned to blonde.
However, coloured black hair will often turn progressively lighter orangey and never appear yellow. This is normal, and it’s due to the artificial pigment in hair. The toner you choose will depend on the remaining colour.
Choose from a variety of toners
The predominant warm colour in your hair is what’s stopping you from getting your blonde hair coloured. To neutralize the orange or golden tones, use an ash colour to tone it out and achieve a natural blonde colour.
You can use a pearl blonde colour to tone your hair rather than ash-blonde if it has a yellow hue but not an orange. This will produce a lighter result that is either beige, neutral or white depending on the depth and time of development. An ash-blonde colour is best for orangey hair. It’s the blue tone of the ash-blonde that will tone your orangey hair to blonde.
If your hair is predominantly yellow, you can tone it with a pearl blonde shade. Likewise, if your hair is predominantly light orangey, you can use an ash blone toning. You should choose a shade that is at least one level lighter than your current bleach colour. The hair level chart below will show you the level of bleaching you have done. If your hair is perfectly golden with no orange tones left, it’s a level 7 medium-blonde. This can be toned down with an ash or pearl blonde hair colour of level 8.
The colour of black dye hair will change from a darker to a lighter orangey shade without reaching yellow. This can make it more difficult to determine the level. To get the best results, compare your current orange colour to determine your level. Next, use an ash-blonde colour that is one level lighter.
To tone your hair, employ a shade which is single level lighter than your natural hair colour. The exact shade you choose will cause your hair to look too dark and will make it appear more ash. As the hair become porous following the lightening. You can still use this formula if you want to tone your hair with an ash blonde hair colour.
Salon or Box Colours
A salon brand hair dye is better than a generic supermarket hair dye. A high-quality salon brand is a good choice. Low-quality ash-blonde hair colours may have green pigments or excessive blue, which can cause a horrible-looking green-tinged colour.
Manufacturers may have overlooked this because green neutralizes the red pigment. When you get to the blonde shades, it’s mainly yellow and orange pigment. To avoid this problem, use a colour made by a high-quality brand. Also, don’t use dyes that named “matte ash” because it normally indicates that it contains strong green pigment.
Toner Application
After you have chosen your colour, you will need to mix it with 10 Vol Peroxide. Then, you will need to section your hair the same way you did for bleaching it. The colour will be applied exactly the same way. The more you apply the colour, the more uniform the colour will appear.
You should only leave the colour in for as long as it takes to tone to your desired colour. It doesn’t have to be left in for the full development time. Depending on how dark your hair is, it may produce too much ash. You will be finally blonde if you rinse it out after you are satisfied.
Finally, you have achieved the blonde hair goals. You will need to care for your blonde hair. The colour of your blonde hair will eventually fade unless you regularly use a colour refresher shampoo and tone it with semi-permanent colours every few weeks. You can tone your hair as often or less frequently as you wish.
A few protein treatments and deep conditioners are also recommended. Your hair will look great again and you have successfully able to go from having black hair to having blonde hair.
