You are not the only one. Frizz fighting is a daily part of many people with curly hair.

Most hacks to get rid of frizz quickly include some form of moisturizing. The concept is actually to prevent curly hair from becoming dry that seem to be prone to this dryness nature. But there are more things you can do than just moisturize.

It might be a good idea to start from the beginning to look at all of the possible ways to prevent your hair frizzing.

Why is curly hair frizzy?

There are many reasons curly hair can be frizzy. Curls naturally dry out. They absorb moisture from the air, which can lead to frizz. Frizz can sometimes be caused by product buildup that may suggest that it is time to clarify. Your strands may need a protein boost.

It makes sense, doesn’t it?

Now, let’s get on with the ideas.

Issue #1: Frizz Caused by Unprotected Sleep

It’s worth it.

When you sleep at night, the weight of your head presses your hair into your pillow. This is most likely covered by a cotton pillow case for your pillow.

Your curls are subject to a lot of friction as you naturally twist and turn at night. Friction means breakage.

If you wake up with implacable frizz, it’s likely that you need to do more to maintain your frizz-free curls during sleep.

Pillow cases made of cotton are no longer applicable. Please use silk or satin.

Who knows? You might be lucky enough to find one in a dollar store.

A satin or super slippery silk pillow cover will prevent frizz and reduce breakage.

This might be something to consider if you get crazy hair upon waking up.

For those who want to go all out, they will sleep on satin and use a scrunchie to pineapple their hair overnight.

This leads this question: “Do you protect your longer curls by pineappleing them?”

The Solution: Use a silk pillowcase or satin pillow case and pineapple your curls before bed to reduce the most friction. This is a good tip to keep your hair from getting frizzy.

Issue #2: Responsible of Self-Induced Frizz

Avoid self-induced frizz by using a hands-off – stay outta touching approach.

It’s better for your curls to not play with them or touch them too often.

This is because oils can cause dry curls not to look as defined. That can result in undefined curls that are hard to manage and stretch out.

Then, before you know what, you have a frizzy mess.

When your hair is still wet, it is even more important to avoid touching it. Don’t touch your hair while it is drying. This can cause your newly formed curl patterns to become unnatural.

One more thing is true. Your curly hair can look a hot mess with lots of frizz if it’s only partially dried. It’s fine if it dries completely.

It’s difficult to resist the temptation to fix your hair in that “between frizzy” stage.

Please, don’t. Refrain from touching it. Let it dry naturally and you will be fine.

The Fix: Hands off is the best policy. It is because, just like in kindergarten, you are taught to keep your hands off of others.

Issue #3: Hi humidity!

Weather is hard to predict. One thing we all can predict, however, is that if it’s humid your curls will show it.

God bless you if you live in areas of high humidity, such as Singapore. You may need to ask for help with curly, frizzy hair.

Because your curly hair is naturally dry, it absorbs moisture wherever it can. The more humid, the frizzier your hair will be. That would be humidified air. You will be a big, poofy mess before you know.

The Solution: Keep your curls moisturized. This will help them resist the temptation to absorb moisture from the air and become frizzy. Or create a humidity safe zone. Hair serum can be applied at the ends to create a barrier against humidity.

Issue #4: You Hold Out on the Water

Water is essential for curls. Water and more water. It’s a magical elixir that will cure your curls.

A spray bottle with H2O is enough to bring frizzy hair back to life.

As a quick fix for mid-day fatigue, a quick spritz of water and some great scrunching is all it takes.

This is yet another example of the importance and beauty of hydration for beautiful frizz-free curls.

Another benefit to using water in excess? Even product distribution. You should give every curl the same amount of product love.

Curly hairstyling and water go hand-in-hand

The solution: Make sure your curls get wet enough. This is especially important if you use products that are water activated.

Issue #5: Your Showering Does Not Have Sufficient Squish

You were warned that many fixes require moisturizing.

Another superhydrating method is here. This is called “squish-to-condish”.

Have you heard of it?

This is where you apply the conditioner to dripping damp hair with your hands. Make sure the conditioner get into your hair deeply.

What you want is the soft, squishy sound that you make as you place your damp hair in your hands. Give it a good squeeze. It happens over and over again.

The Fix: Learn how to squish-to-condish. It’s easy, and many people swear that it works.

Issue #6 – Abuse Your Curly Hair using Terry Cloth

Terry cloth is a great way to roughen the cuticles. You know that friction thing?

So please, only microfiber or older cotton tees

It is important to not rub your skin too vigorously. Make sure to scrunch the water into your tee.

Certain people are more gentle than others. However, no one should rub their curls with a towel.

The Solution: Simple. You should say no to terry cloth for your hair.

Issue #7: Suffer from Not Enough Hydration

How to hydrate or moisturize frizzy curly hair?

Perhaps it is time to check the condition of your hydration in your curls.

We are referring to the products here more than the water.

Sometimes frizzy hair can be caused by a lack of lipids (fats). Deep conditioning, if the hair is dry or lacking in moisture, may be the remedy.

This should not surprise you. You know this because those coils prevent your hair’s natural oils, which nourish the entire length of those strands.

Curly hair hydration treatments are here to make up the difference. The goal is to keep the ends hydrated.

Tip: Apply hair oil to your hair ends for many days in a row. Repeat this process every 10-14 days.

It might be worth starting with a once-a-week deep conditioning treatment. How your hair is responding to this treatment will help you determine how it should be done. You can adjust the frequency depending on the results whether or not your hair feels less dry or less frizz.

The Fix: Make sure you moisturize your curly hair every week. Use a deep conditioner, or an oil mask. Use it at night and sleep with it through the night.

Issue #8: Are Curly Hair Friendly Products Strangers to Your Curls?

You want products that will enable your curls both defined and manageable. You want soft touchable curls with definition and no frizz.

Use Tip – Remember to use these products on damp hair.

It may not be necessary for your mane to be dripping wet, but you do want it to be more than wet. The condition can be just like as soon as you shower. Because your cuticles will be open most of the time and thus more accepting of the product.

The aim of these products is to seal in more water and adds more lipids depending on the product.

This is a match made in Heaven when it comes down to fighting frizz.

Do not try to scrunch anything into damp hair. It won’t work as it only encourages frizzies. This doesn’t mean it won’t work on your hair.

The Fix: Let’s see if we can find the defining gel you love for your curls. This will allow you to rock your naturally curly curls with pride. You should also avoid products containing silicone as it can cause hair to become dry and brittle. Avoid shampoos with sulfates. Product ninjas are also on the alert.

Issue #9: The Curls Product Application Strategy

It can make a big difference to know how to apply creams, oils, and gels. You need to know how to apply your creams, oils, or gels to your curls. Everyone is different in their understanding of “best”.

Consider when you should apply your leave-ins conditioner.

HINT: It’s best to do this when your hair is still damp. Your cuticles are most open and receptive for hydrating goodness.

You also want to improve your application technique

It could be your best move.

Perhaps you could use praying hands.

One section. Others don’t. You have more control over your results if you work in smaller sections.

Do you need to soak your hair wet?

The product application process is complex.

Some people prefer to apply products with the praying hands method. This involves running your product-laden hands through your hair. Finally, you can then scrunch it in.

Tip: Before applying hair oil or leave-in conditioner, rub the product in your hands. Start at the ends, and work your way upwards. This will be a good way to perfectly match your hair’s needs. Your ends are dry. Roots are not as dry. This will prevent any unwanted weighing down on your strands.

The solution? Experiment. Experiment with different ways of applying your products to discover the best way to use them.

Issue #10 – Is Your Diffusing Method Different?

If your hair appears to be in a lion’s mane after a bad day, your diffuser may have issues.

Tossing your curls around all over the place can result in clump separation, creating frizz. This is unacceptable.

Which is the most curl-friendly method to diffuse?

It’s also known as pixie diffusing.

This basically means that you should drape your curls in a diffuser cup and turn the blow dryer off. The diffuser should be pressed against your scalp. The heat and air will only be turned on when the diffuser is pressed against your scalp. This prevents your curls and hair from getting blown all over, which certainly is a proven solution for frizz.

The Fix: Stop moving your diffuser in any direction.

Issue #11: Are You Listening to What Your Curls Tell You?

Pay attention to your hair and listen to what your hair says. It will let you know what you should do.

Don’t expect to be able to do that overnight.

It will take some time to discover which products, techniques, and ideas work best for your curly hair.

Good news: Your curls will tell you everything.

It will be visible in the mirror. Do you see wild hair? Or big, soft and bouncy curls.

Tip: There’s an option for a mid-course correction. Try to reduce the amount of products you use in winter and fall when it is cooler and less humid.

You will learn how to manage your hair if you take the time. You can then review your work and make adjustments. You can also consider things like seasonal changes that bring more humidity. Are you staying indoors more with heated dry furnace air?

The Fix: Pay close attention to what your hair is telling you. You will create a routine that gives curls the nourishment they need.

Frizz Causing Problem #12: Are You Brush Happy?

We thought everyone knew that the brush was not your best friend when it comes to curls. It is even true for dry hair. If there was even one, there is a one way ticket to Frizz-ville.

Too often, girls become too obsessed with their curls and go from being gung-ho to being oh no!

This can also ruin your curl pattern and cause hair frizz.

The best time to brush your curls is before you shower to remove tangles.

The second could be right after shampooing.

Tip: It is best to brush your hair after drenched your hair with conditioner application.

The Fix: A detangler is the only brush that should be used on wet hair.
