Keratin is a type of protein that is the main component of hair and shields it from stress and injury. Treatments containing keratin will smooth frizz and curls as well as boost shine for as long as two to five months. The keratin treatment is applied to fully dried and clean hair and it is not rinsed out prior to the hair being straightened and blow-dried. The treatment should remain within your hair at least two days before washing your hair again, in which you should refrain from using clips or hair ties during these times. When washing your hair, wash it only when you need to and use the shampoo that is sulfate-free (no conditioner).

Choosing a Keratin Treatment

Keratin treatments are the process of infusing keratin into the porous portions of the hair strand in order to enhance the shine and smoothness of hair while also reducing wave and frizz. Firstly, the hair is washed and then clarified to eliminate any impurities. After that, the keratin mixture is applied to hair in sections that are then thoroughly dried and it is ironed in the hair to seal and bond it. In general, the whole process can take about 90 minutes.

Washing and Parting Your Hair

  • Cleanse your hair using an anti-residue shampoo. Massaging the shampoo in your hair, and then work to create a lather. Allow it to rest for 3 to 5 minutes before washing it off. Apply the shampoo a second time. Make sure you wash it completely from your hair thereafter. Do not apply any conditioner or hair mask. Leave your hair as clean as it is.
  • Anti-residue shampoo was designed to eliminate buildup from your hair, like from styling products and conditioners. This will help to prepare your hair for a uniform absorption of the treatment with keratin.
  • Anti-residue shampoo can also be referred to as “clarifying shampoo.”
  • Blow drying your hair until completely dry. Use your fingers to run through your hair while you blow dry it on the setting of medium heat. Be sure your hair is completely dry, unless the product’s instructions say otherwise.
  • A Brazilian treatment may require your hair to be a bit damp (85-90 percent dry) while most Keratin treatments may need completely dry hair. Because these words “Brazilian” and “keratin” (as they pertain to different keratin hair treatment) are often used interchangeably, it’s crucial to verify the product’s instructions.
  • Section your hair. Utilising a comb or hair pick, create a parting down the centre of your hair. Begin clipping your hair into 4-8 sections (depending on the amount of hair you’ve got). Make sure you have clipped each section with enough force that it remains secure during the process.

Treating and Drying Your Hair

  • Be sure to follow the product’s instructions properly. The type and brand of keratin treatment you select will give you accurate instructions for applying the treatment with keratin. It is important that you read and follow all instructions and safety guidelines.
  • If the instructions for your product differ from these guidelines, you must always adhere to the instructions that are provided by your keratin manufacturer that made the product.
  • The product should be applied evenly on your hair. Wear gloves, a smock or old clothing. Choose a section of hair, and then apply treatment beginning with a small amount and gradually increasing until your hair is evenly coated but not too heavily saturated. Use a comb with a fine tooth or hair colouring brushes to apply the product evenly into every hair section, from roots until your ends. Make sure to clip each section after you’re finished.
  • Let the product rest on your hair for 20 to 30 minutes, or according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Protect your hair using an elastic shower cap. The product should stay on your hair according to the time that the instruction calls for.
  • Drying your hair. Take off your clips and the hair cap. Do not rinse the product on your hair unless the instructions have stated that you have to do so. Blowing dry your hair while the product is still in. Choose the cold or hot setting of your blow dryer according to the setting which the product instruction suggested.
  • Straighten your hair using flat iron. Adjust the flat iron to the temperature specified by product’s instructions for your specific hair type. Once the flat iron has reached the proper temperature, it is time to straighten your hair using small sections (about 1 to 2 inches in thickness). It is possible to clip up sections of your hair before or when you are done straightening them.
  • A flat iron which is too hot can damage your hair and lead to breakage.

Maintaining Your Keratin Treatment

  • Don’t wash your hair until at minimum three days. If you wash your hair too quickly, it will reduce the longevity and lifespan of the keratin treatment. If you are able to put off till a week prior to having your hair washed, that’s even better!
  • Try dry shampoo if the inability to lather your locks is causing you problems.
  • Hair ties should not be used for at minimum 48 hours. Don’t use any ponytail holders, such as elastics or clips for hair, as you can. No tucking of hair behind your ears. Consider a bandanna made of fabric for a way for your hair to stay from your face.
  • Clips or Hair ties could cause a crease to your hair. However, this won’t occur if you are wearing a tie in a loose manner.
  • Avoid using heat or any particular hair-care products on your keratin treated hair. Keratin treatments can last longer if the styling processing or drying your hair using the heat is avoided. Rinse your hair only whenever you need to – with the shampoo alone (skip conditioning). Make sure to use shampoo without sulfate.
