Over the past couple of years, and into 2022 specifically we’ve noticed there is an increasing trend as though everyone appears to opt for shorter haircuts instead of the longer lengths. We observed that the trend of shorter haircuts like the wolf cut, the mullet cut and shag rise in the years 2020 and 2021. Recently, we’re seeing the shortest haircut trends such as the mixie, bixie and many more are also rising to the top of the list.
We all understand that hair and beauty trends are seasonal and cyclical, but we were feeling that there could be something deep inside that was causing the people to cut their hair shorter. It turns out that there is psychological reasons for why people are getting shorter haircuts in the present day.
There are numerous factors that may cause one to cut their hair shorter. One of the reasons is most obvious: it’s trendy and fashionable, so you feel inspired. Hence they wish to fit in, be noticed, feel modern, look trendy and so on.
Other factors are related to what’s going on in someone’s life at the moment. They are in need of a change in their life or desire to feel more in control as a way of expressing themselves. They may be going through a transition, or a major event; cutting hair is symbolic of a new start and releasing the past.
As for others, cutting their hair short was an empowering experience. Most of them will feel that shorter hair is empowering, edgy and exciting. For them, at least it did. Hair length can frequently be correlated with the way we perceive or understand what we are experiencing at that point of time.
Besides, we are noticing that there are many trending hairstyles for 2022 which were popular years ago. Although this change could simply be a trend, many believe that this is more than just just short hair being a trend. As a society, we are looking at the notions of beauty, gender, age as well as masculinity in new ways and pushing away from the outdated or traditional ways of thinking. In the past, long hair (for women) was associated with desirability, sexuality, youthfulness and beauty while women who were not in their “prime” (whatever this is) may be expected to wear shorter hair. The trend of short hair could be rooted in a renewed sense of self-confidence in people’s ability to express themselves (outside of conventional expectations). It’s a declaration of independence and an expression of what was previously thought to be masculine in its traditional persona.
The trend of short hair comes and goes during times of revolution. With the huge, global protests we’re witnessing for climate change, Black lives and workers rights as well as LGBTQIA+ rights, this is logical. We’re currently in the midst of a significant transformation that is likely to take away the outdated practices of our world and are in the way of something new and exciting.
Before you cut off your hair, here are some suggestions. Hairstyles, like everything else we do, should reflect how we feel about ourselves. Ask yourself if the haircut you’re considering is suitable for you prior to committing to the most dramatic haircut.
Always bear in mind that a haircut may not transform your life, but it can be an empowering and authentic act.
