How To Tell If Your Curly Hair Is Weighed Down or Limping?
A while ago, when one of our customers with curly hair asked for help, we mentioned the possibility that their curls could be limped or weighed down. They replied by asking us how they could determine whether or not the curls they were wearing were weighed down.
Almost instantly, it dawned on us that this would make an excellent subject for a blog article. It was a really good question and one with which we would have needed assistance in the beginning as well. We were aware that there was a good chance that this was information that others would also be interested in knowing.
Signs That Your Curly Hair Is Getting Weighed Down or Limping

- Your roots appear to be greasy or wet.
- You sense that your roots are sticky or “producty”.
- The curls you have are flat rather than bouncy.
- You feel that your hair is weighing down.
- You do not seem to have as much volume as usual.
- Your curls begin to lower on your head than normal.
- Your natural curl pattern has become less tight and straighter over time.
How Can You Tell If Your Curly Hair Is Weighed Down or Limping?
You need to be aware of how your curly hair “usually” appears, feels, and behaves to determine whether or not it is weighed down. Is it typical in comparison to how it normally feels, or does it seem heavier, flatter, straighter, less voluminous, or less bouncy? If that is the case, there is probably some weight to the curls.
You may have observed that many of these symptoms need you to compare them to what you consider to be “normal.” When you are first beginning to embrace your naturally curly hair, this is one of the things that might be challenging. If you have not paid much attention to the condition of your hair in the past, you may not be aware of what constitutes a normal baseline condition for you.
That is kind of how it is when you first start to embrace your curls or when you start paying more attention to your hair for the first time in your life. Sadly, there is no simple answer to the problem that can be provided. You may, however, start to be particularly attentive to how your curly hair looks, behaves, and feels. This is the best thing you can do. In this manner, you will begin to know what your normal curly baseline is, and then in the future, you will be able to do the comparison in the later stage.
Taking regular images of your hair may be something that many of us find to be of great assistance. It is easier to see little changes in your hair if you can compare images of your current hair to pictures taken one week ago, one month ago, and three months ago. By comparing images, for instance, you may quickly determine the height of the curls on your form at various times.
Taking notes on the physical state and appearance of your hair is also beneficial. When you first started, if anything like your hair was sticky, you would, of course, be aware of it. Things like whether your hair felt bouncy or limp were things that were not immediately visible to you until you began paying a lot more attention to detail.
If you are someone who does not yet know what your hair or curl type is, you should immediately begin photographing and taking notes on your observations. You will not have to wait long before you become more “intune” with your hair, which is a significant step toward achieving your goal of having curly hair.

Whether or not the wavy hair is dragged down.
Products that are often too heavy for use on curly hair include the following:
People who have curly hair often make the mistake of believing that they can use practically any product that is made for textured hair or curly hair. This leads to several problems. There is no one-to-one correlation between the characteristics of your hair and the way it curls.
On the other hand, there are some characteristics of the hair that are more common in those who have wavy hair as opposed to curly hair.
In any case, the majority of individuals who have wavy hair are unable to utilize products that are quite heavy in consistency. Some products designed for curly hair are formulated for very dry hair, which is more frequent in type 3 and 4 hair than in type 2 hair.
In the same vein, co-washing may be too heavy for many individuals with curly hair, which is why many find that using a shampoo that does not include sulfate is the most effective method.
The majority of the time, do not use a leave-in conditioner or cream since your hair does not need the additional moisture and may be easily weighed down by leave-ins. This is the recommendation. To keep from being weighed down, though, wavies with dry hair that need moisture should be selective about the leave-in conditioners and other hair products that they use.
Does weighed-down limp curly hair matter?
It is possible that the condition of your weighed down hair is not “bad” at all, depending on the factors that are causing it. In our opinion, the answer to the question of whether or not weighing down is “bad” on curly hair depends on the factors that are causing it.
In this blog, we go into detail on how to combat the effects of humidity on curly hair by employing several different techniques. In our opinion, this is just a matter of personal taste in styling. Because some may like the curl pattern to begin higher on the head and because they favor greater volume, some may do their best to avoid being weighed down by the water. This is because most curly hair individuals will enjoy more volume. If you do not have any preference for styling your curls to how it should look, then you should just let it air dry.
If you let your hair stay wet for a relatively long time, it will get very moisturized as the hair moisture-protein balance will be affected. Despite this, we would say that many individuals let their hair air-dry regularly, and it is not a huge issue at all. If maintaining a certain hairstyle were not important to you then you should not care about whether or not the water would make your hair appear weighing down.
The situation is a little bit different if your curls are being weighed down by other factors other than water. There are a lot of benefits to identifying the products that are ideally weighing down your curls, therefore if your products are too heavy, it is highly recommended that you find a solution to the issue as soon as possible. In addition, utilizing overly heavy products will probably cause your hair to feel greasy more quickly and will not feel very nice to you physically. This is because heavy products weigh the hair down quickly.
The weighing down issues of the curls brought on by product build-up might be detrimental in the long run. In the case that you have a buildup that is severe enough, water may be prevented from entering your strands. As a result, your hair may get dehydrated from the inside out and finally, hair breakage may occur. This would only happen under very dire circumstances; but, it is not impossible. Therefore, it is in everyone’s best interest to make an effort to prevent serious build-ups.
