Tape Extensions

Hair Extensions Average Price Range

The price of hair extensions at Hera Hair Beauty salon varies between $300 to $4,500 and depends on several factors:-

  • The method used for the extensions, such as Tape-In, Clip-In, Sew-In, Glue-In, Fusion, Weave, Bonded and Micro-Bead or Micro-Ring Extensions. Different methods work for different hair types but our specialist will advise you on the best method for your hair type in your initial consultation.
  • The number of hair extensions needed for your desired end result. So, a full head is going to cost a lot more than partial extensions, for example
  • The volume, thickness, length and density of your natural hair in comparison with your desired result. Hair extensionists will advise you on the number of hair extensions needed after looking at your natural hair. If you have thin or fine hair, for example, you will need more extensions attached than if you already have thick, voluminous, long hair that just needs extra length or thickness.
  • The quality and texture of the hair extensions. 100% human hair and/or virgin hair is the gold standard and will look completely natural. Synthetic or synthetic-blend types of extension are less expensive but do not last as long or achieve the same effect.

Clip-In Extensions ($300 to $1000)

Clip-in hair extensions are wefts of hair that are attached to your natural hair by small pressure sensitive clips. Clip-In Hair Extensions are most suitable for medium length, thick hair. Clip-In hair extensions are an excellent solution to hair thinning problems.

Pros of Clip-In Hair Extensions
  • Easy to apply.  Clip-In hair extensions are simple and easy to apply compared to other methods like fusion or micro-bead. The hair is parted and separated and the extension is simply clipped in. No glue, heat or tape is required!
  • Versatility. You can add Clip-In hair extensions to glam up your loo for a big night out. You can experiment with a wide range of trendy, amazing hairstyles without having to commit to one permanent look. Clip-Ins are a girl’s dream come true, you can literally grow long, luscious locks overnight. Clip-Ins also allow you to experiment with color, low-light or highlight shades, or bright and brilliant hues can be temporarily added to your hair.
  • Totally Natural Look: Choose Clip-In extensions made from 100% human hair for that naturally glossy look. You can almost exactly match Clip-In hair extensions to your natural color.
  • Durability: Clip-Ins can last between six months to a year if not worn continuously and properly cared for.
  • Comfort: Clip-In hair extensions are very comfortable and when applied properly do not damage your natural hair.
Cons of Clip-In Hair Extensions
  • If not applied properly Clip-Ins may slip off, especially if the clips are not of good quality.
  • Maintenance: Clip-in extensions do need some care. You will need to brush, wash, condition and possibly detangle the hairpieces and store them correctly.

Cost Guide to Clip-In Hair Extensions

Clip-In hair extensions cost around $300 for a twenty-inch length of hair and around $1000 for a bunch of 9 sections and thirty inches in length.

Clip-in hair extensions can be a cheap hair extension option as you can buy them and attach them yourself. However, be careful about buying cheap clips that can result in slipping and sliding or even falling out.

For professional results, visit a salon to have customized Clip-In hair extensions made and fitted just for you.

Tape-In Extensions ($400+)

Tape-In hair extensions are additional sections of hair that are attached very closely to the roots of your natural hair with double-sided keratin tape. Tape-In Hair Extensions are suitable for most hair types but your hair needs to be at least 4 to 5 inches long.  Please speak to our specialist at Hera Hair Beauty for individual advice.

Pros of Tape-In Hair Extensions
  • Safe, Comfortable and Natural: Tape-In hair extensions are very comfortable and do not damage the hair. Tape-In extensions consist of thin, lightweight panels that can cover large areas of hair. The extensions lay flat on the head so they are superbly concealed and create a good flow.
  • Quick and Easy to Apply: You will not need to spend all day in the salon, tape-in hair extensions take around 10 to 30 minutes for volume applications and 40 to 60 minutes for length.
  • Natural: Tape-Ins, when applied professionally, result in very natural-looking hair.
  • Reusable: Tape-In hair extensions can be worn for six to eight weeks per application and then reused.
Cons of Tape-In Hair Extensions
  • High Maintenance: Tape-In hair extensions require a lot of care.  You must use the correct hair products that are silicone, sulphate, alcohol and oil-free to prevent the extensions from slipping. You will need good quality moisturizing and protection products because Tape-In hair extensions can dry out faster than natural hair.
  • Tape-Ins may leave a sticky residue when applied and removed.
  • Tape-In hair extensions may tangle easily. Regularly separating any small knots or tangles with your fingers can help.

Sew-In Extensions ($600+)

Sew-In Hair Extensions, as the name suggests, are literally tracks of hair sewn into your natural hair. Sew-In hair extensions are not suitable for those with fine or thin hair, they are most suitable for those with thicker hair. Sew-In hair extensions are becoming increasingly popular amongst celebrities and stars and with good reason.

Pros of Sew-In Hair Extensions
  • Relatively affordable: Sew-In hair extensions are comparatively less expensive than some of the other hair extension methods.
  • Suitable for shorter hair: Some hair extensions require that you already have fairly, long thick hair, whereas Sew-In hair extensions can be added to shorter hair.
  • Natural Seamless Finish:  The hair roots are not visible with the sewing method and so the extensions blend in seamlessly with your natural hair. The color of the thread is also matched to your natural hair.
  • Secure and Dependable: These hair extensions hold firmly to the hair because they are sewn in. The bond between the natural hair and the extension is sewn and does not slip or slide so you can relax.
  • No added products: Attaching sew-in hair extensions does not involve glue, heat or chemicals which is excellent news.
  • Low Maintenance: There is no particular extra haircare necessary. You look after your hair as you normally would with good quality shampoo, conditioner and heat-protecting products. Some women with Sew-In hair extensions sleep with a silk scarf to prolong and protect the extensions.
Cons of Sew-In Hair Extensions
  • Longer Hairdresser Appointment: Sew-In hair extensions do take a bit of time to put in, although the wait is worth it! The time depends on the length and texture of your hair and the result you would like, but on average allow three to six hours.
  • If not expertly inserted, sew in hair extensions can cause strain on the scalp by pulling down on the natural hair resulting in breakage and damage over time.

Real Hair Weave ($300 to $1200)

Real hair weaves are the basic hair extension types. The natural hair is often braided into cornrows or tracks and hair extensions are sewn onto the tracks.  Best suited to thicker hair types, but do come in for a consultation to discuss your individual needs.

Pros of Real Hair Weave
  • Instant Volume and Instant Length: Our real hair weave is that fairy-tale transformation that most of us dream about. Instant results for long, luscious, flowing, totally-natural looking hair.  It doesn’t get much better than this!
  • Instant Colour, no damage: Weaves can be exactly matched to your natural color. You can also experiment and have some fun with moody blues, great greens, perky purples or fiery reds, whatever you fancy and NO dye damage.
  • Versatility: Loads of luscious locks to preen and style however you fancy.
  • Natural Hair Protection: Over time coloring, styling and heat treatments can weaken and damage our hair. A weave can protect your natural hair taking all the styling abuse whilst your natural hair has a well-deserved rest and can recuperate and grow.
Cons of Real Hair Weaves
  • Expensive Maintenance: Natural hair weaves may need to be touched up every two weeks and last on average for around two months.
  • Expensive Product: For the best weave results, natural hair is essential to achieve the most stunning results. This is a true case of ‘you get what you pay for’ and you just can’t scrimp on a weave. Less expensive synthetic or synthetic-blend weaves can look artificial and cheap. 100% natural hair is the only choice.
  • Can be Itchy: If you suffer from a dry scalp a weave can exacerbate the symptoms and cause discomfort and itchiness. Ensure you moisturize your scalp in the days leading up to your weave appointment.
  • Pain or Discomfort: The hair is tightly braided and the weave is sewed into the braid so some people may find the pulling and braiding uncomfortable whilst others may find it painful. If you have a low pain threshold a weave may not be for you.

Keratin Bonded Hair Extensions (Pre-Bonded or Hot Fusion) ($200 to $5000)

Keratin Bonded hair extensions also known as Pre-Bonded or Hot Fusion are suitable for all hair types. These hair extensions have a built-in keratin-based polymer that bonds to the natural hair.  The hair extensions are attached to the natural hair using a heat tool called an extension connector iron. The heat-based attachment method is why this method is also known as ‘hot fusion’

Pros of Keratin Bonded Hair Extensions (Pre-Bonded or Hot Fusion)
  • The Keratin Tips that bond the extensions to the natural hair are both invisible and flexible. The finished effect is an entirely natural look.
  • Keratin is a protein naturally found in the hair and so it is very gentle and hypoallergenic for those with sensitive scalps.
  • Suitable for Everybody: Whether your hair is thick, thin, long, short, straight or curly, these hair extensions are suitable for all.
  • Durable: With a little extra care these hair extensions last around 4 to 6 months but can last up to 9 months.
Cons of Keratin Bonded Hair Extensions (Pre-Bonded or Hot Fusion)
  • Expensive: A trained hair extension specialist must install the extensions.
  • Technical Skill Required: If the extensions are not expertly applied it can cause problems, such as headache and itching or damage to the hair and scalp. Also, if the extensions are not expertly removed it may damage or weaken the hair and scalp. So choose your specialist with great care.
  • Aftercare: Hair extensions will need some care to prevent them from getting tangly or knotty. Use moisturizing, natural hair care products and tangle teaser combs.
  • You need to avoid using heated styling tools such as curling or straightening irons on the bonds as it can weaken the attachment and cause shedding.

Pre-bonded Extensions

Micro-Bead (Micro-Ring) and Micro-Link Extensions ($400+)

Perhaps some of you may have known it as Micro Ring hair extensions. The micro-bead and micro-link methods of hair extensions are amongst the most affordable and fashionable and give amazing results. Micro-Bead extensions are most suitable for those with thicker hair.

As the name suggests, a micro-bead with a silicone lining attaches the hair extension to the natural hair. The hair extensionist threads a little segment of natural hair through the bead or ring and then they slip a small part of the extension through the bead or link so that it is placed above the natural hair. Finally, pliers compress the ring, bead or link. The finished bead will rest completely flat on the head.

Pros of Micro-Bead (Micro-Ring) and Micro-Link Hair Extensions
  • Affordable: Micro-Beads are less expensive than some of the other hair extension methods.
  • Natural: This method does not use any chemicals, heat, glue, or bonds and is therefore very gentle and natural on your hair and scalp.
  • Ease of Use: Micro-beads are easy to attach, remove, and adjust.
  • Reusable: You can reuse your hair extensions at your next appointment which is always a bonus.
  • Great Result: Due to the method of attaching individual strands the result is a natural-looking head of hair with flowing movement and bounce.
  • Durability: Microbeads can last up to six months.
  • You can style and dye the extensions as normal but you do need to avoid oil-based hair products.

Cons of Micro-Bead (Micro-Ring) and Micro-Link Hair Extensions

  • You need to have healthy hair otherwise these types of extensions are not suitable.
  • Some clients experience headaches, scalp discomfort and itchiness after the initial application of Micro-Bead hair extensions. This is mainly due to an inexperienced extension specialist placing the beads too close to the scalp so always choose a certified salon such as Hera Hair Beauty.
  • Unsuitable for those with fine or thin hair as the tiny, micro-beads may be visible through the hair.

Cold Fusion Hair Extensions ($600 to $2000)

Fusion hair extensions are extremely popular amongst the jet set. Fusion/Pre-Bonded hair extensions are suitable for all hair types, including those with thin or fine hair. These hair extensions have a built-in protein keratin-based polymer that bonds to the natural hair.  The hair extensions are attached to the natural hair using ultrasonic waves, rather than heat. This method is often known as ‘cold fusion’.

Pros of Cold Fusion Hair Extensions
  • The Keratin Tips that bond the extensions to the natural hair are both invisible and flexible. The finished effect is an entirely natural look.
  • Very Gentle on the hair: Cold Fusion extensions are very gentle on the hair because they do not use heat. This can be helpful for those with weak or thin hair.
  • Gentle Application Method: These extensions are so gentle they can be used for those with skin conditions such as alopecia. They are also suitable for those with thinning hair for whatever reasons, for example, thyroid issues, hormonal changes, viral infections, genetics, etc.
  • Long-Lasting: Cold Fusion extensions will generally last for around 3 to 6 months.
  • Cold Fusion extensions are suitable for those with shorter hair because they are applied to the roots of the hair.
Cons of Cold Fusion Hair Extensions
  • Expensive: A skilled, trained hair extension specialist must install the extensions and this can be expensive.
  • Technical Skill Required: If the extensions are not expertly applied it can cause problems. Also, if the extensions are not expertly removed it may damage or weaken the hair and scalp. So choose your specialist with great care.
  • Length of Stylist Appointment: Can take upwards of four hours to have the extensions put in.
  • Aftercare: Hair extensions will need some care to prevent them from getting tangly or knotty. Use natural, moisturizing, haircare products and tangle teaser combs.
  • You need to avoid using heated styling tools such as curling or straightening irons, on the bonds as it can weaken the attachment and cause shedding.

Questions & Answers

Question 1:  Will I save money by buying my hair extensions from the wholesalers?

Buying your hair extensions from a salon tends to be more expensive than buying them directly from a wholesale supplier. However, the expertise of a seasoned and certified hair extensionist is priceless in providing you with all the advice, information and tips on choosing the type of hair extensions that are the perfect fit for you.

It is by far better to choose a certified and experienced extensionist to guide you through the many types of hair extensions and the many methods. We believe that it is better to save up for a while and go for the very best that you can afford, rather than scrimping and cutting corners and ending up with a poor and disappointing result.

Do feel free to make a consultation appointment at Hera Hair Beauty Salon to discuss a tailored plan for your hair extensions.

Question 2:  How much do the actual hair extensions cost?

The cost of hair extensions varies widely. Synthetic or partially synthetic hair is less expensive than 100% human hair. Human hair is the gold standard and gives a far more natural feel, flow and finish. Human hair is also easier to style. 100% human hair extensions cost between $150 and $400 direct from the supplier but you will pay a little more at your salon. The price depends on the source and the grade of the hair.

Just as a side note, virgin hair refers to hair that has never undergone any form of treatment. Virgin hair is the highest quality of hair extension. Virgin hair has the advantage of blending seamlessly with your natural hair and you can colour and style it with no problems.

If you are going to invest in high-quality human hair extensions, it makes sense to employ the services of an experienced hair extension specialist to advise you on the best choice and method of installation tailored to your natural hair type and needs.

Question 3:  What are Full Hair Extensions and how much do they cost?

Full hair extensions usually refer to the longer hair extensions that are attached to both sides of the head and the back of the head, from beneath the crown to the nape of the neck.

Synthetic hair extensions are less expensive and range from $10 to $100 per package. However, Virgin human hair extensions can cost up to and above $3000 dollars including the installation by a certified hair extensionist.

It is very difficult to give exact prices because there are so many varying factors such as the type of hair extension, the method of installation, the state (length, thickness and health) of your natural hair and your desired result.

This is why an initial tailored consultation with a specialist at your certified salon could save you a whole lot of time, money and tears.

Question 4: How long do hair extensions last?

This is certainly one of the most important questions if you are thinking of investing and committing to enhancing your hair through hair extensions.

Again, the lifespan of your hair extensions will depend on several factors including the type of hair extensions, the method used to put them in and your aftercare and maintenance efforts.

Taking the above variables into account, below is a rough guide to the lifespan of the different methods assuming optimal aftercare and maintenance,

Type of Extensions Average Lifespan

Clip-Ins 6 Months to One Year

Glue-Ins 6 to 8 weeks (reusable)

Tape-Ins 6 to 8 weeks (reusable)

Fusion/Pre-Bonded (Cold Fusion) Up to 3 months

Keratin Bonded (Hot Fusion) 4 to 6 months

Micro-Bead (Micro-Ring) and Micro-Link Up to 6 months

Question 5: Do hair extensions damage your natural hair?

Certain types of hair extensions can harm or damage your natural hair over time. This is why it is so important to choose your hair extensionist carefully. An experienced specialist will ensure you have the best type of hair extension and method for you.

If not properly maintained, or cared for, hair extensions can become tangled or matted over time.  Heated styling tools such as straightening or curling irons can damage the extension hair and bonds. Certain shampoos, conditioners and hair products, especially those that are oil-based or contain chemicals, can damage the extension bonds and hair.

Some methods, such as clip-in extensions cause no damage to your natural hair whilst others may cause a small amount of damage to your hair.

A very important factor in keeping your natural hair healthy is ensuring that you have a qualified extensionist remove your extensions as this is often the time when the damage is done. Your extensionist will have the appropriate tools and methods to remove the hair extensions without causing damage, fraying or breaking the hair.
