Everyone loves those flawless, smooth, bouncy curls. What’s better? Gorgeous, perfectly curled hair that lasts the day. We’re sharing some of our popular tips and tricks on how to curl hair so it lasts all day. These tips can also be used if you are wearing hair extensions.
- During Showering
The shower is the best place to get the perfect curls. It is better to curl your hair on the third or fourth day (see tip #2), but you can still take some steps when you wash your hair to make sure your curls last hours.
Avoid using conditioner to wash your hair. Conditioners can make your hair too soft and slippery which can lead to hair falling out more quickly. To ensure curls last longer, you need to add enough texture and grit to your hair to support the curls in position.
- Refrain from Curling your Hair Immediately after Shampooing
As abovementioned, 2nd or 3rd day hair is the best for forming curls. While we love the feel of having clean hair, curls are more resilient with dirtier hair. This is because the hair will generate its natural oils after a few days which give it a grittier texture, natural hold and no need for hair mousse. Curls are more likely to last longer. Dry shampoo can be used at the roots to absorb extra oil if you are in between washes and the hair tends to be oiler.
- Prepare your hair
We mentioned that your hair should have the right texture so it can hold curls all day and night. This can be achieved by using the right hair products. Apply a thickening mousse before curling your hair. Hair mousse is made with alcohol, which will dry out your hair and increase its grit. We recommend that you use alcohol- and sulfate free hair products. However, we actually rarely recommend using an alcohol-based product. You should use an unsparing amount of hair mousse to cover your entire palm. Then, work the mousse through your hair from the roots to the ends.
- Make Sure You Use the Correct Hair Products
- HEAT PROTECTANT
This is the best styling product that you can use before styling your hair. Heat styling is the #1 way women damage their hair. You can buy a heat protector at your local drugstore or hair salon. Or you can use certain hair oils as heat protectors. These are natural and effective ways that you can protect your hair from the heat styling process.
- HAIRSPRAY
Assist your curls and they will thank you! Use styling products to help your curls stay in place. Depending on your hair type, you can use mousse or gel before you dry your hair. Spray a little hairspray on your hair before, during, and after curling. This will give your curls a rougher texture and will prolong the curls’ life expectancy. Every woman needs to know which products are available and which ones will work best for her hair.
Tip: Avoid putting too much hairspray on your hair. This will cause your curls to become dry and stiff. Spray a light mist on your hair and let it dry for a while before you apply heat.
- Invest in Good Hot Hair Tools
Your hair may seem straight like a stick and your curls may fall loosely in 20 minutes. You will have such negative thoughts if your curling irons and curling wands are cheap and drugstore-brand. Only by switching to higher quality, more expensive hot tools will you see that your problem isn’t your hair. It’s the curling iron or wands.
Higher end curling wands and irons are normally made of ceramic or tourmaline. These are the two materials that have been proven to be less damaging than straight metal. Indeed they may be more costly, but they will do less damage to your hair and heat up faster (so heat will last for a shorter time), and these high end tools will last you many years. High-quality hot tools are a great investment in your hair’s beauty and health. To achieve the best curl, we recommend that you set your heat to 350F. Hair extensions require a lower heat setting than normal hair.
- The Right Size Barrel is Important
Because curls will fall and wear differently depending on how tight they are formed, it is important to know your barrel size. A common misconception is that you need a larger barrel for curling wands or irons to achieve those Victoria Secret sexy Curls. However, a smaller barrel is more effective than a larger one and we find it to be true most of the times. Instead you can try to use a smaller size barrel depending on the type of hair you have. The curls will look better and last longer. Sometimes, a bigger barrel may cause the curls to fall out faster than it should as it can loosen to waves.
You should also know the difference between a curling iron and a curling rod or wand. They will produce different types of curls. A curling iron is best for tight, princess curls. However, a curling wand or rod allows you to create your own curls type. You may need a new technique to achieve smaller or larger curls with the same curling tool with the similar curling rod. - Keep Your Curls Healthy: Cool Them Down
First, set your curls, then let them cool down and finally you let them go. This is one of the best ways to keep curls and hold them in place. Every new curl should be taken and kept in its original spiral curl shape. Secure it firmly with a clip, bobby pin or similar. This is how it works. The heat from the curling iron is transferred to the hair strands as you wrap them around it. This is what causes them to change their shape. Once your pinned curl has cooled, the heat will cause the hair’s cuticle to close and hold in place with the curl shape. This will make the curl last longer. This video will show you how to perform this technique. The same technique can be used to curl your hair extensions. After unclipping curls, let them cool for a few minutes before you begin to brush them. You can cause curls to lose their shape quickly if you disintegrate them too fast.
Tip: Have you ever wondered what is the function of your cool button on your hair dryer? It’s great for giving yourself some cool air in the summer. But in actual fact, the function of the cool air is used to set your spiral styles. You don’t need to wait 10 to 15 minutes for curls to set. Instead, pin the curls firmly on your scalp and then use your blow dryer to blow cold air from a distance.
- The Advantage of Tighter Curls
After your curls are cool, you may remove the clips from your hair. Next, gently shake your hair to loosen curls, run your fingers through your hair to break up the curls. As your curls will eventually fall out and hence it is better if you leave them a little tighter when you are getting ready as they will last longer. This is a bonus because your curls will probably have relaxed in perfect waves once you reach your destination.
- Finish off with Texturizing spray
Texturizing spray is less heavy and intense than hairspray, and it doesn’t require you to use as much quantity to make your curls bouncy. Texturizing spray adds volume to your hair and can be used in the same way as a dry shampoo by able to neutralize the oils on the scalp. Hairspray can still be used before, during and after curling, but a texturizing spray will hold curls in place while not dragging them down. Texturizing spray will give your hair more body, texture, and make it look fuller.
- Your Hair Doesn’t Seem to Be Curled?
This is a sign that your hair is in crisis. Hair that is too damaged (including split ends), doesn’t curl well and doesn’t style well. Shower them the love by giving your hair a trim. You can also avoid split ends by following these guidelines. Regular trims can actually speed up hair growth so don’t be afraid to take a few shaves. A hair mask is an option that can be used for deep hair conditioning especially for those with dry or damaged hair. You can make some DIY hair masks with just a few ingredients in the kitchen. They will give you softer, healthier hair that is ready to curl.
We hope that we have the solution for you if you aren’t doing any of these things but struggle with curling your hair.
